Quick Sand

No, I don't mean the stuff that you can die in. This is just an easy way to make sand that can be slopped down onto bases.

Ingredients:
SAND ~ by 'sand' I mean white sand, like that stuff you find on a beach, not soil or dirt.
PVA GLUE ~ the white stuff that dries clear.
WATER ~ the stuff you drink to live.
PAINT ~ preferably browns, unless you are going for an alien surface.

Method:
Using a small container or icecream container (an empty one, otherwise your icecream will taste gritty) mix the sand, glue and water to make a nice, not too sloppy, mix. If you played baking games with mud when you were little you probably know the right consistency to use, unless you were one of those kids who made really sloppy mud cakes, in which case there is no hope for you, you dirty little sod. *cough*
Roughly about a small handful of sand to a large squeeze of glue and a couple of teaspoons of water. If you dont think its gluey enough add more. Just screw around till you get a nice consistency that is easy to put on your bases.

All you do then is put it where you want on your base. My ringwraiths were based using this method, albeit a sloppier version. Tyrion was also based using this method, though I made a lot more of the mixture for his base... as you can imagine.

As you can see, the 'Quick Sand' can be placed around rocks and shaped however you like - providing it's not too sloppy.

Tyrion's base was made by first constructing a foundation for the miniature out of paddlepop sticks. You could also do this with sheets of thick cardboard. Once the foundation was at the height I wanted, I began placing medium sized rocks around the base of the foundation. Those rocks were then partly covered with the quick sand mixture so that they would be jutting out the side of the hill once the mixture had dried. The slot for Tyrions gaming base was made by laying down the quicksand mix and pushing it up to where the base would sit. I used a paddlepop stick and stanley knife to pat the wall of quick sand back, so that the base could slot in nicely once it was dry.

Hope that made sense.

Here's a close up.
Here are those Ringwraith bases, sorry for the crappy photo.
